Uses
Sodium chloride injection is a versatile and essential medical solution used for various clinical purposes. Its primary applications include:
- Rehydration and Electrolyte Replacement:It is used to replenish lost body fluids and electrolytes, particularly in cases of dehydration, excessive sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea. It helps maintain fluid balance and electrolyte concentrations, especially in patients with fluid and electrolyte disturbances.
- IV Therapy:Sodium chloride injection is commonly used as a diluent or solvent for other medications that need to be administered intravenously. It is also used to flush IV catheters to prevent blockages and to remove any residual medication from the catheter site.
- Wound and Surface Cleaning:The sterile solution can be used to clean wounds, nasal passages, or during surgical procedures.
- Hemodialysis:It is used as a priming solution in hemodialysis treatments.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage and administration of sodium chloride injection depend on the patient's age, weight, clinical condition, and laboratory findings. Here are some general guidelines:
- Hypotonic Solutions (e.g., 0.45% Sodium Chloride):Suitable for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance when only small quantities of salt are desired.
- Isotonic Solutions (e.g., 0.9% Sodium Chloride):Used for replacing chloride losses that exceed or equal sodium losses.Commonly used for general hydration and as a diluent for other medications.
- Hypertonic Solutions (e.g., 3%, 5%, 23.4% Sodium Chloride):Hypertonic solutions are used to correct severe salt depletion or to provide concentrated electrolyte replacement. The maximum intravenous dosage for hypertonic solutions should not exceed 100 mL per hour or 400 mL per 24 hours.
- Administration Instructions:
- Always use sterile techniques when preparing and administering the solution.
- Inspect the solution for particulate matter and discoloration before use.
- For hypertonic solutions, administer slowly through a large vein to minimize venous irritation.
Storage
Proper storage is essential to maintain the integrity and safety of sodium chloride injection:
- Temperature: Store at room temperature, typically between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Avoid freezing.
- Protection from Light and Moisture: Keep the solution in its original container, protected from light and moisture.
- Single-Use Containers: Sodium chloride injection is often provided in single-use containers. Discard any unused portion after administration.
